Non-traditional | Audience Level: Introductory

With nearly 300 museums across North Carolina, the state offers abundant opportunities for cultural and community engagement for our clients. Museums can support learning, social connection, relaxation, and discovery. Increasingly, museums are reaching new audiences, including people with disabilities, by reducing barriers to participation and creating meaningful, inclusive experiences. With expertise in how context influences performance, along with skills in activity analysis and strengths-based practice, occupational therapy practitioners are well positioned to partner with museums to improve access to these important community resources. Participants will leave the session with greater awareness of museum accessibility initiatives, a deeper understanding of the benefits of arts interventions and museum participation for people with disabilities, and a plan for collaborating with local stakeholders and museums to support community participation.
