From Student to Leader: Why State OT Associations Matter

Maryann B. Brennan OTD, MA OTR/L; Dr. Hannah Guschel, OTD, OTR/L

Leadership & Administration

Many occupational therapy students and early-career practitioners recognize the importance of professional organizations such as the American Occupational Therapy Association, but fewer understand the unique opportunities available through their state occupational therapy associations. As a result, many miss valuable opportunities for networking, mentorship, and professional growth. This interactive lunch-and-learn session explores how involvement in a state occupational therapy association can enhance career development from the first year of OT school through advanced practice. State occupational therapy associations provide opportunities that support these developmental experiences through advocacy, leadership, networking, continuing education, volunteer service, and collaboration with practitioners across diverse practice settings (American Occupational Therapy Association [AOTA], n.d.). Through personal experiences, real-world examples, and audience discussion, attendees will discover how meaningful engagement in a state occupational therapy association can transform professional growth, strengthen leadership skills, and expand career opportunities.
