Kayleigh Fessenden, OTD, OTR/L; Jennifer Smith, MS, OTR/L

Education, Research, & Scholarship | Audience Level: Introductory

This session explores how integrating live client encounters into occupational therapy education strengthens empathy, ethical reasoning, and rapport building. Using structured interactions with individuals living with stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury, students engage in occupational profiles, interviews, and assessments that move learning beyond simulations and case studies. Presenters will outline strategies for preparing students and clients, facilitating respectful communication, and creating meaningful reflection opportunities. Presenters will also discuss the benefits of students working with clients who demonstrate real functional deficits rather than practicing solely on classmates or faculty, highlighting how authentic encounters better prepare students for fieldwork, strengthen professional reasoning, and build confidence. The session also examines ethical considerations, including client dignity and emotional safety.
