Technology, Assistive Technology, and ?
This session will explore commercially available assistive technology (AT) that occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) can readily integrate into evaluation and intervention across home, work, and community settings. Participants will review a range of off-the-shelf solutions—including smart home devices, adaptive clothing and footwear, medication management systems, and consumer electronics—and examine how these tools can be leveraged to support independence, safety, and participation. Using clinical examples and a human–activity–technology framework, the presentation will highlight strategies for matching commercially available AT to patient goals without reliance on insurance or specialized procurement pathways. This session will advance OTP practice by expanding awareness of accessible, cost-effective AT options and promoting creative, client-centered approaches to intervention that enhance functional outcomes and everyday independence.
