OT Ethics and Implicit Bias

Amber L. Ward, MS, OTR/L, BCPR, ATP/SMS, FAOTA

Ethics | Audience Level: Introductory

This session involves a reminder of the OT Core Values, Code of Ethics, and Standards

of Conduct from the lens of implicit bias, ableism, and our own actions as OT

practitioners. We will examine the link of these everyday ethical concepts and bias with

client success, best practices for shared decision making, and fair treatment through

discussion and case study. The uncomfortable link of OT practitioners choosing a

“helping profession” and health disparities and disability will be included and research

presented. Concepts of communication intent vs. effect, equal access and inclusion,

and harnessing the strengths of OT will help participants increase their awareness of

the issues and offer actionable solutions.
