Reframing Pediatric Behavior Through the Lens of Sensory, Regulation and Executive Function

Brittni Winslow MS, OTR/L

Children and Youth | Audience Level: Introductory

As pediatric OTPs, we know how behaviors are a topic of discussion. We see children who melt down, shut down, or push back against nearly everything, and the behaviors can impact progress within our sessions as well as disrupt harmony within the settings where they spend most of their time. Practitioners who address the behavior on its own rarely get to the root of what is actually happening. The nervous system is trying to communicate something, and until we learn to read that signal, we are working with only part of the picture.

This workshop builds a three-part clinical framework rooted in sensory processing, self-regulation, and executive function. Through case studies and guided application, participants will practice shifting from a response-focused lens to an interpretive one, and will leave with practical tools for carrying that shift into their clinical work and the families they serve.
