The Value of Strengths-Based Occupational Therapy Practice for Autistic Adults

Sharon Eva

Mental and Behavioral Health | Audience Level: Intermediate

Research highlights significant barriers preventing autistic adults from engaging fully in meaningful daily occupations. Consequently, they remain an underserved population. However, occupational therapy is uniquely equipped to bridge this service gap. We are experts at analyzing components of occupations, identifying barriers to engagement, and cultivating problem solving skills so that our patients and clients are empowered to be active participants in their own lives. This session will provide occupational therapy practitioners with strategies to deliver person-centered, neurodiversity-affirming care with a focus on sensory health. The presentation covers applicable theoretical frameworks like strengths-based approaches and the social model of disability, practical strategies to facilitate daily engagement, and interactive case scenarios which will be workshopped together.
